Verifying your age on Character AI confirms you’re 18 or older. This keeps your full, unrestricted access to the platform’s chat features. Then came the lawsuits. Families of teenagers who died by suicide sued the company, claiming its app formed unhealthy attachments with young users and failed to intervene. Those cases pushed leadership toward a public reckoning.

What Happens If You’re Flagged as Under 18
Getting flagged cuts off more than a filter. Character AI redirects flagged accounts away from companion chat and toward video or story creation tools instead. One on one companion conversations vanish from the account entirely until the check clears.
The clock shrinks too. Flagged accounts see an alert once only fifteen minutes of chat time remain for the day. When that time runs out, the app locks chat access until the next day.

What Verifying Your Age Actually Unlocks
Passing the check gives you back exactly what an unflagged adult account already has. Nothing more.
Companion chat returns in full. The redirect to video and story tools disappears, and daily time limits drop away. You can pick up conversations with characters exactly where the restricted experience cuts them off.
Verifying also stops the app from asking again. Once Persona confirms your age, Character AI treats the account as an adult going forward, so the prompt should not reappear unless something changes on the account later.
One thing verifying does not do is loosen content rules beyond that baseline. It restores standard adult access. It does not remove Character AI’s general moderation, and it will not unlock anything an already verified adult account could not already do.
How the Verification Process Works
Finding the check takes three taps. Open Settings, tap Advanced, then select Verify Age. The same path works whether you use the app or the website, though older app versions may need an update first before the option shows up.
A selfie verification step comes first. Character AI hands this off to Persona, a third-party verification provider trained to estimate age from a live photo. Most people finish this step in seconds.
Persona escalates to a government-issued ID only when a selfie does not settle the question. A driver’s license or passport works for this backup step. Character AI states it never views the uploaded document itself, since Persona handles that check separately.
Once either step confirms an age of eighteen or older, the restriction clears and the account returns to full access right away.
What Happens to Your Data
Character AI keeps a clear line between itself and your photo or ID. Persona handles that material directly, and the company says it never collects or stores those files on its own servers.
Retention has a short window. Persona holds onto submitted IDs for one week, then deletes them. Biometric data from the selfie step follows the same seven day limit before removal.
